Botanical evidence indicates that India and China were among the first countries to cultivate tea. Although the English are known for their love of tea, Americans invented the tea bag and began the practice of drinking iced tea in the early 1900s. Today, hundreds of millions of people drink tea around the world, and studies are now suggesting that one variety of tea in particular—green tea (Camellia sinensis)—has many health benefits.

Neutrophil restraint by green tea: inhibition of inflammation, associated angiogenesis, and pulmonary fibrosis.

Neutrophils play an essential role in host defense and inflammation, but the latter may trigger and sustain the pathogenesis of a range of acute and chronic diseases. Green tea has been claimed to exert anti-inflammatory properties through unknown molecular mechanisms. We have previously shown that the most abundant catechin of green tea, (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), strongly inhibits ...

Green tea catechins are potent anti-oxidants that ameliorate sodium iodate-induced retinal degeneration in rats

Green tea extracts exhibit anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory actions in different disease conditions. We hypothesized that green tea extract and its catechin constituents ameliorate sodium iodate-induced retinal degeneration in rats by counteracting oxidative stress. In this study, adult Sprague-Dawley rats were intravenously injected with a single dose of sodium iodate. Green tea extract (G...

Green Tea Polyphenol Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate Attenuates Behavioral Abnormality in Hemi-Parkinsonian Rat

Background: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major constituent of green tea, has been introduced as a potent free radical scavenger and can effectively reduce free radical-induced lipid peroxidation. Since free radical injury plays an important role in neuronal damage in Parkinson’s disease (PD), this study examined whether EGCG administration would reduce functional asymmetry in an experimen...

New insights into the mechanisms of polyphenols beyond antioxidant properties; lessons from the green tea polyphenol, epigallocatechin 3-gallate☆

Green tea is rich in polyphenol flavonoids including catechins. Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant and potent green tea catechin. EGCG has been extensively studied for its beneficial health effects as a nutriceutical agent. Based upon its chemical structure, EGCG is often classified as an antioxidant. However, treatment of cells with EGCG results in production of hydrogen pe...

Antimicrobial potential of epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG): a green tea polyphenol

The compounding problem of microbial resistance has become a global threat nowadays and demands urgent attention. Given the limited number of clinically proven drugs available, reversion towards compounds from natural resources have become renewed source of interest. Utilization of novel and potent antimicrobial agents with different targets can act as accessories to antibiotic therapy. Conside...

In vitro activity of 23 tea extractions and epigallocatechin gallate against Candida species.

In this study, we investigate the susceptibility of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, and Aspergillus fumigatus using the EUCAST microdilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method (final tea supernatant concentration range 5.0-0.005 mg/ml) to 23 different teas and tea catechins including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) isolate...
